Haunted hartwood
Since its closure, Hartwood has become a site of fascination. Roofs have collapsed, corridors echo with ghost stories, and its eerie silhouette has earned it a cult following among urban explorers and paranormal enthusiasts. Hollywood even came calling. In 2020, Matt Reeves’ The Batman transformed the ruined hospital into a fitting lair for Gotham’s orphans.
Throughout everything, one feature remains resilient: the hospital’s original J & G Coughtrie lighting. The SP model fixtures can still be found fixed to walls amongst various eerie corridors. They have withstood not just the passage of time but also two major fires in 2004 and 2016, making their survival and durability legendary in itself.
Our own Jonathan Allan found the timeless piece while wandering the Hartwood halls.
QUOTE
“My friends and I enjoy exploring old sites like these. While inside, I was using a torch to illuminate a small and windowless room. As I turned to leave, my torch shone upon a very familiar looking light above the door! I was very surprised with the good condition of the light, particularly the glass which (minus the dust) looked like it had been fitted the previous week.”

Light that lasts
J & G Coughtrie lighting can be found anywhere from ships to nightclubs, and even on the big screen. Their presence at Hartwood, even to this day, proves their durability and longevity. The J & G Coughtrie promise of a modern fixture that lasts is only proven by the fact that these SP lights can be found amongst the ruins of the hospital even today.
This particular SP fixture is a popular choice for outdoor and industrial settings, and comes in a variety of colours, with fluorescent and LED options.
